Fig & Walnut Bread (Grain & Gluten-free)

Image
One thing about not eating grains and gluten is you miss out on a lot of baked goods, which at the end of the day is a very good thing for your gut. That said, we all deserve treating ourselves and who doesn't like bread? Although bread has been infrequent in my diet for the last several years, occasionally I'll get the craving for a nice nutty piece slathered in butter. Luckily, there are ways to make it happen--guilt and tummy ache-free. Almond and coconut flour are commonly used in baking grain-free/paleo recipes, and I can attest that they do the trick. I've experimented with several recipes over the last couple of years and was pleasantly surprised (and pleased) for having an alternative way to make treats like bread and baked goodies. Now make no mistake, nut flours are high in omega- 6 fat which can cause inflammation and other health issues when consumed in excess. Not to forget they also contain anti-nutrient phytic acid, which I spoke about in a previous pos...

Morning Nutrient Dense Shake

Image
This is one of my new favorite things to have in the morning. It's packed full of vitamins and minerals, is alkalizing for the body and increases bile production (good for constipation). Given its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, you'll want to get one of these delicious drinks in your system daily. This nutrient dense "shake" provides a powerful dose of vitamins A, K, C, beta-carotene, iron, B vitamins and a healthy dose of good fat and protein (thank you, egg yolk and yogurt) making it a great balanced way to start your day.   How did I come up with this blend of nourishment and yummy-ness?    Beginning this year, I started the GAPS (Gut & Pyschology Syndrome) diet to work on healing my digestive system and get a handle on my health issues to include allergies, food sensitivities and eczema. It's been quite a journey so far and is still an ongoing healing process that you will be hearing more about in upcoming posts. The GAPS program ...

Apple-Berry Porridge

Image
I can't take credit for this recipe, but it's so yummy I have to share it. I was in preparation for leading a cleanse and came across this last year in Adina Niemerow 's book, Super Cleanse . Adina is a bay area holistic chef and her roster of experience includes The French Laundry , Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center as well as being a holistic chef to Donna Karen, Ben Stiller and the late Steve Jobs to name a few. Her recipes are clean, simple and tasty. Just the way I like it. This "porridge" is incredibly delicious with just the right textures. For me, it makes for a perfect mid-morning or late afternoon snack. I drizzled a little warm coconut oil on top as I put coconut oil on everything. This recipe is for 2 servings, but I am pretty certain I finished it in 1... and then made more. :) Enjoy. Ingredients: 1 large apple, peeled, chopped and diced 1 cup of berries of your choice- I used blueberries 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds, soaked overnight Pinch o...
